Dr Graeme Wilkes

Consultant in sports and exercise medicine, GP and medical director, Connect Health


Dr Graeme Wilkes is a Consultant in Sport and Exercise Medicine, GP and Medical Director for Connect Health, a specialist provider of NHS community MSK services and Occupational Physiotherapy.

Previously a GP partner for 13 years, he served as lead doctor at Newcastle Falcons rugby for 15 years until 2010 and Senior Sports Physician for the English Institute of Sport since 2003, a post he still holds. His Sports Medicine service also includes Newcastle Eagles Basketball doctor for 15 years, regular service to GB and England Hockey and a variety of other elite sport service. He is an instructor on the RFU Pre-Hospital Immediate Care in Sport course.

Dr Wilkes has attended four major Games including Commonwealth Games of Delhi 2010 and Glasgow 2014. He was GB Hockey team doctor at the London Olympics in 2012 and attended the 2016 Rio Olympic Games as Team GB HQ doctor. He currently is team doctor to Sunderland Ladies AFC.

Over recent years he has reduced his regular sport commitment and spends 95% of his time clinically leading Connect Health, an independent provider of community musculoskeletal services to the NHS. Connect has 32 community NHS services nationally, employing over 300 clinical staff .

Interests includes Musculoskeletal Ultrasound, management of tendinopathy, MSK rehabilitation and neurodynamics.
